HVAC Optimisation
Tesco Merrion is located in Merrion Shopping Centre in Dublin 4. It is next to St Vincent’s University Hospital. The Tesco store is on ground floor of the shopping centre. There is an underground carpark in this centre with no 1st Floor retail units. All the HVAC plant is located on the roof above the store. The store operates on a 24-hour basis but is only open to customers between the hours of 7 am to midnight; shelf stacking is performed through the night.

Killiney Heating received an initial instruction from Tesco Maintenance Department to inspect the entire heating system and all HVAC plant with the view of improving the overall store temperatures. There is a glass roof in this store so there is a lot of heat loss in this store. They also recently refreshed the shop floor and relocated fridges & removed deli and butcher serve over areas.
The Solution
The 8 AHU carrier units are a number of years old and were not running efficiently. We removed the gas burners from 7 out of 8 gas fired AHU’s on the roof. We installed LPHW units and installed pipe work from the plant room in the yard below to all 7 of the units. We included 3 port valves for control solutions to each of the units. This was done with the intention of making the AHU’s run efficiently and reducing the overall gas usage in the store. We altered the ducting on the shop floor to redirect the heat in to the colder areas in the store.
Killiney Heating found that due to the age of the equipment and the redesign of the sales floor, the heating was no longer working to suit the store requirements. The 8 AHU’s are required to heat all areas of the store but some were not running as they should. We installed 6 Siemens QAA24 sensors to break the store in to 3 zones with the aid of BMS to ensure a balanced heat distribution throughout the store
Killiney provided the following services on this project:
Initial heating & HVAC plant review
Installation of 6 sensors to break the store in to 3 separate zones and wired back to the BMS
HVAC System optimisation
Modifications to the HVAC equipment
Re-commissioning.
The Result
The store is achieving temperature in all areas now. The overall gas usage in the store is down as the gas fired burners have been replaced with LPHW units. There is now a minimal heat loss as we have balanced the heating distribution and redirected ducting in to the colder areas of the sales floor.
